After years of visiting and living on Cape Cod, I realized I’d never had the opportunity to talk to a fisherman. But I ate a lot of fish, and realized I was probably making a lot of assumptions, about the fish, and about the people who got it to my plate. So I told Janine Perry, AD at Cape Rep, I wanted to write an investigative theater piece about Cape Cod’s small boat fleet, and in 2016, Cape Rep commissioned me to write the play. The project was supported in part with a grant from Mass Humanities. 

As the show was conceived in The Civilians’ style, there needed to be music. I wrote lyrics, and composer Peter Hodgson joined me in the endeavor in August of 2017; the show premiered that November. Boundless played to sold out houses, and garnered rave reviews, The Cape Cod Times calling it “urgent, indigenous art.” In May of 2018, we took Boundless to two sister ports for successful and artistically informative readings at Gloucester Stage Company and The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center. In fall of 2019, we continued to develop the show when it was mounted as a mainstage production at Cape Cod Community College.
